C Subbaiyan, VrC

Biography

Naik C Subbaiyan served with 2 Madras of the Indian Army. During Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, his unit was deployed at Nedukandal Bund when his section came under heavy fire from the LTTE. During the ensuing exchange of fire, Naik Subbaiyan was shot in his lower leg and thigh. Despite his injuries, he continued moving from man to man, motivating his soldiers and maintaining their fighting spirit. While doing so, he was hit again on the lateral side of his hip. As the engagement continued, nine of his men were injured. Despite having already sustained multiple gunshot wounds, Naik Subbaiyan continued to lead and support his men. While providing first aid to one of his injured soldiers, he was struck again, this time in the chest. The operation lasted for approximately seven hours. Despite being shot three times, Naik C Subbaiyan remained undeterred and displayed exceptional courage, determination and bold leadership until he breathed his last on 30th July 1989. For his exceptional bravery, bold leadership and supreme sacrifice, Naik C Subbaiyan was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously.
