Biography
Lance Naik Gian Singh Parihar hailed from the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. He served with the 25 Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army, a unit engaged in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. In early October 2014, tensions along the India-Pakistan border had escalated sharply, with the Pakistani army repeatedly violating the ceasefire. On 5 October 2014, Lance Naik Gian Singh Parihar was deployed at a highly sensitive forward post in the Poonch Sector. During this period, the Pakistani army opened unprovoked and indiscriminate fire, soon followed by heavy mortar shelling. Disregarding their own safety, Gian Singh Parihar and his team gave a befitting response to the Pakistani barrage. In the midst of this exchange, a mortar shell fired from the Pakistani side exploded very close to his post. The sharp metal splinters from the blast struck Gian Singh Parihar directly, grievously wounding him, and he attained martyrdom.
