Biography
Major Deepak Rawat was born on 22 September 1971 in New Delhi and was commissioned into the 65 Engineer Regiment of the Corps of Engineers. Later attached to 3 Rashtriya Rifles, he served in the Kashmir Valley during counter-insurgency operations under Operation Parakram. On 25 June 2001, acting on credible intelligence, he led a search and cordon operation against heavily armed militants. During the fierce encounter, Major Rawat displayed exceptional courage and leadership, continuing to lead his men despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He ultimately made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at the age of 29. For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage, and selfless devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. He is survived by his wife, Smt. Anju Rawat, and daughter, Lamha.
