Saurabh Kalia

Biography

Captain Saurabh Kalia was the first Indian officer to detect and report the large-scale Pakistani intrusion that led to the Kargil War. Born on 29 June 1976 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, he was commissioned on 12 December 1998 from the Indian Military Academy and posted to the 4th Battalion, Jat Regiment. On 15 May 1999, Captain Kalia led a patrol of five soldiers — Sepoys Arjun Ram, Bhanwar Lal Bagaria, Bhika Ram, Mula Ram, and Naresh Singh — near Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector. After exhausting their ammunition, the patrol was surrounded and captured by Pakistani forces. They were held captive for 22 days and subjected to brutal torture in violation of the Geneva Convention. Post-mortem examination revealed their eardrums had been pierced, eyes punctured, bones broken, and bodies mutilated. Captain Kalia's body was returned on 9 June 1999. Despite being the officer who first alerted India to the Pakistani intrusion, Captain Saurabh Kalia was never awarded any gallantry award — a fact that remains a point of national discussion. His father, Dr. N.K. Kalia, has campaigned extensively for justice, including filing a PIL in the Supreme Court and petitioning the UN Human Rights Council. Memorials in his honour include Saurabh Smriti Kaksha in Palampur, Saurabh Van Vihar, and Capt Saurabh Kalia Marg.
