Biography

Major P Shyam Sundar was born on 2 August 1975 in Kolkata, West Bengal. A graduate of the National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy, he was commissioned in 1997 into The Madras Regiment. He served with 19 Madras, 10 Madras, and 38 Rashtriya Rifles. Known as a physically exceptional officer with martial prowess and deep care for his men. On 5 March 2006, during a counter-insurgency operation near Bhimber Gali in Poonch district, his patrol came under heavy fire from militants concealed in jungle. When Sepoy Rama Rao was critically wounded, Major Shyam Sundar braved the hail of bullets and rushed forward to retrieve his fallen comrade. He was struck by multiple rounds while carrying out this rescue and made the supreme sacrifice. He was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for his gallantry and selfless courage.
