Biography

Bhawan Tamang hailed from Lopchu village in Darjeeling city of West Bengal. He was recruited into 2/11 GR of 11 Gorkha Rifles Regiment, known for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle exploits. During 2016, his unit was deployed in the Turtuk sector of Ladakh as part of Op Meghdoot. The area was very active and volatile, requiring troops to maintain a high state of alert at all times. On 25 March 2016, Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang and Rfn Sunil Rai were part of a patrol when heavy snowfall resulted in multiple avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir. The patrol team was struck by a horrific avalanche while navigating the treacherous terrain in hostile weather conditions, and he made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
