Biography

Jiwan Gurung was born on 11 April 1994 in Bagdogra, Darjeeling district, West Bengal. He joined the Indian Army at the age of 20 in 2014 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of 1 Gorkha Rifles. On 11 January 2019, Rifleman Jiwan Gurung was part of a reconnaissance team operating in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district along the Line of Control. During the patrol, the team encountered an Improvised Explosive Device planted by a Pakistani Border Action Team. The explosion killed Rifleman Gurung and injured two others, including a Junior Commissioned Officer. He was just 24 years old when he made the supreme sacrifice.
