Biography

Sujjan Singh was born on 30 March 1953 in Kanina Khas village, Rewari district, Haryana, to Shri Mangat Singh. He enlisted in the 13th Battalion, The Kumaon Regiment. He participated in the 1971 Indo-Pak War in the Longewala sector. He advanced to the rank of Naib Subedar in 1991 and subsequently to Subedar. In 1994, he was deployed in Kupwara district, Jammu & Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations. On 26 September 1994, during an encounter at Zalurah village, Subedar Sujjan Singh charged at militants through heavy gunfire to protect his team, sustaining fatal injuries. His courageous actions enabled his comrades to launch a successful counterattack, eliminating all the militants and recovering a significant weapons cache. He was 41 years old at the time of his martyrdom. For his extraordinary bravery and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Ashok Chakra, the nation's highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously.
