Biography

Kishan Chand Yadav hailed from Jahajgarh village, Jhajjar district, Haryana. He joined the Indian Army on 9 January 1980 and was posted to the Kumaon Regimental Centre at Ranikhet. He was promoted to Lance Naik in 1989 and posted to 20 Kumaon Battalion. On 12 April 1992, during counter-insurgency operations in Punjab, Lance Naik Kishan Chand was manning a checkpoint at Mauli village, Phagwara tehsil, Kapurthala district. He encountered two wanted terrorists attempting to flee. Despite being shot and severely injured, he picked up a Light Machine Gun and fired at the tyres of the fleeing terrorists' car, disabling it. He continued firing at the terrorists, killing both of them before succumbing to his injuries. For his exceptional bravery and supreme sacrifice, Lance Naik Kishan Chand Yadav was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
