Biography

Rifleman Ishtiyaq Ahmed hailed from Palmar village in Kishtwar Tehsil of Doda district in Jammu & Kashmir. Born on 3 April 1978, he grew up valuing hard work, discipline, and duty. In 1996, he joined the Indian Army and was assigned to the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, recognized for its valor and dedication. During training, he earned respect from instructors and peers alike. After completing initial training, he was posted to the 12th Battalion of JAK LI, where he displayed commendable discipline and professionalism in challenging operational environments. Following deployment in Siachen, his battalion was reassigned to the Batalik sector in Kargil in May 1999. On June 7, the unit received orders to recapture Point 5203, positioned at 17,000 feet in the Kargil-Yaldor area — a strategically vital objective. Captain Amol Kalia led a specialized team of 13 soldiers, including Rifleman Ahmed, who were airlifted to the area amid hostile conditions. Despite relentless enemy fire that covered most of the approaches, the soldiers advanced with exceptional determination, employing mountaineering techniques to overcome treacherous terrain and fortified enemy positions. In the early hours of June 9, 1999, at approximately 3:00 a.m., the team launched a daring assault on the enemy positions under the cover of darkness. Rifleman Ahmed and his comrades successfully established a foothold on the northwestern slopes of Point 5203. Undeterred by the overwhelming odds, he fought fiercely, ultimately making the supreme sacrifice for the nation. The battle resulted in 11 Indian casualties, but the recapture of Point 5203 proved pivotal for the Batalik sector.
