Biography
Gururaj S was born on 5 April 1980 in Chamrajpet, Bangalore district, Karnataka. After studying at V V Puram College and Dr. B R Ambedkar College, he joined the Indian Army in 2000 at the age of 20. He was posted to 17 Guards of The Brigade of Guards before being deputed to 21 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir. During Operation Rakshak in May 2009, Lance Naik Gururaj S participated in a counter-infiltration operation in the Rajpura sector of Handwara tehsil, Kupwara district. When his unit detected suspicious movement near the Line of Control, a fierce gun battle ensued. Displaying exceptional courage under fire, Gururaj fought valiantly but sustained multiple gunshot wounds and made the supreme sacrifice on 30 May 2009.
