On 07 April 2017, heavy snowfall triggered a devastating avalanche in the Batalik sector of Ladakh that struck an army post, trapping five soldiers. The army pressed in specialized avalanche rescue teams and equipment that continued the rescue operation despite hostile weather conditions and 15 feet of snow throughout the night. Despite the valiant rescue efforts, Lance Naik Bihari Marandi, along with Sepoy Lakra and Havildar Prabhu Kirke, could not be saved and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
