Biography
Satish Machhindra Shinde hailed from Satara district in Maharashtra. He attended the National Defence Academy and was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, into 7 Rajputana Rifles. On 07 April 1986, while on annual leave at his home in Satara, approximately ten armed dacoits attacked him and two family members outside his house. Despite being severely injured by the sudden assault, Captain Shinde fought back with extraordinary courage. He managed to close the main entrance of the house to prevent the intruders from entering, maintaining fierce resistance for ten minutes and single-handedly thwarting the robbery attempt. He sustained grave injuries during the encounter and succumbed to them the following morning at the hospital. For his exceptional bravery and selfless courage, Captain Satish Machhindra Shinde was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on 26 January 1988.
