Biography

Major Ashish Kumar Dubey was born on 8 July 1973 in Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh. He was drawn to a life in uniform from an early age and went on to join the National Defence Academy, followed by the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the 20th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles in 1996, an infantry regiment renowned for its fighting traditions and battle honours. Over the next several years, Major Dubey served with distinction across varied operational terrains. He was later deputed to the 43 Rashtriya Rifles, a unit engaged in active counter-insurgency operations in the Pir Panjal range of Jammu & Kashmir. Known for his sharp tactical acumen, calm composure under fire, and a deep bond with the men he led, he quickly earned a reputation as a fearless and inspirational young officer. On 6 May 2003, acting on specific intelligence about the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in the Thanamandi area of Rajouri district, Major Dubey led a search-and-destroy operation deep into the forested heights. Leading from the front, he tactically deployed his troops to seal all possible escape routes before closing in on the hideout. As the cordon tightened, the terrorists opened heavy automatic fire on the assault party. Undaunted, Major Dubey pressed forward and engaged the militants at close quarters, drawing fire onto himself to give his men room to manoeuvre. In the fierce firefight that followed, he sustained grievous gunshot wounds and laid down his life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army at the age of 29. For his conspicuous gallantry, exemplary leadership, and supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy, Major Ashish Kumar Dubey was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.
