Biography

Subedar Moda Ram was born in Sunari village of Nagaur district, Rajasthan. After completing his schooling, he joined the Army and was inducted into the Parachute Regiment, an infantry regiment renowned for its brave soldiers and daring operations. He later volunteered to join the 10 Para (Special Forces) battalion, known as the "Desert Scorpions", trained specially for desert warfare. By 1988 he had completed over twenty years of service and had risen to the rank of Subedar, developing into a dedicated soldier with considerable experience across various operational areas. In 1987 his unit was deployed to Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, which became embroiled in a prolonged conflict against the LTTE. On 26 August 1988, based on reliable intelligence, 10 Para (SF) was tasked to strike a militant hideout. As Subedar Moda Ram and his team approached the suspected area, they came under a sudden ambush by heavily armed LTTE militants. Acting swiftly, he redeployed his men and launched a counter-attack, and the team eliminated seven militants. In the ensuing heavy exchange of fire he was hit by multiple bullets and grievously wounded, later succumbing to his injuries. For his exemplary courage, indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Sena Medal.
