Biography

Harminder Pal Singh was the son of Army veteran Capt Harpal Singh and was educated at Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Kharar, and Government College, Mohali. Commissioned in March 1992 into the 18 Grenadiers, he was known as 'Sant-Sipahi' (saint soldier) among his troops. During a cordon and search operation against militants in Baramulla district on April 13, 1999, he displayed exceptional gallantry, eliminating two militants before being fatally wounded in action. He was cremated with full military honours on April 14, 1999. He was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. His son, Lt Navteshwar Singh, later joined the same battalion in 2023, carrying forward his father's legacy.
