Biography

Lance Havildar Ram Kumar Lamba hailed from Devawas village in Tosham tehsil of Bhiwani district and was born on 1 April 1965. He joined the Army on 1 August 1985 and was inducted into 18 Grenadiers. During Operation Vijay in June 1999, his unit was deployed in the Drass sector. On 3 June 1999, as part of an assault group attacking the heavily fortified Tololing ridge at over 15,000 feet, his advance came under withering enemy fire. With utter disregard to his personal safety, he crawled close to an enemy sangar and, though hit by gunshot wounds to the shoulder and waist, lobbed a hand grenade that killed one occupant and injured two others. He killed the remaining occupants in hand-to-hand combat before succumbing to his injuries, his actions inspiring his men to capture vital ground at Point 4599. He was awarded the Vir Chakra.
