During Operation Vijay on 3 June 1999, in the assault on the Tololing ridge, he led his platoon against heavily fortified enemy positions at over 15,000 feet. Though impeded by machine gun fire, he deployed his platoon and crawled ahead with a small team to neutralise the machine gun in close combat, killing two intruders. Despite a grievous injury he pressed forward, charging onto the enemy and killing another intruder in hand-to-hand combat, inspiring his men to gain vital ground and facilitate the capture of Point 4599. He succumbed to his injuries after accomplishing the mission and was awarded the Vir Chakra.
