Biography

Naik Samunder Singh Hooda hailed from Sanghi village in Rohtak district and was born on 1 August 1969. He joined the Army on 17 May 1987. During the Kargil conflict, on 3 June 1999, he was part of Subedar Randhir Singh's team assaulting the Tololing ridge at over 15,000 feet. With the platoon's advance impeded by heavy machine gun fire from an enemy sangar, he charged the position and, in hand-to-hand combat, killed one intruder, enabling the capture of Point 4599. He succumbed to the injuries sustained during the operation. A gallant and gritty soldier, he laid down his life at the age of 29 in the service of the nation and was awarded the Sena Medal.
