Biography

Sepoy Banwari Lal Bagaria hailed from Sigdola Chhota village in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, where he was born on 15 July 1977. Like so many young men of his region who looked upon military service as the highest calling, he joined the Jat Regiment and was posted to its 4th Battalion. During Operation Vijay in 1999, his battalion held positions in the Kaksar sector. On 15 May 1999, he was among the patrol led by Captain Saurabh Kalia that moved forward to check for enemy intrusion. The patrol was caught in heavy and sustained crossfire from entrenched Pakistani troops, and after exhausting their ammunition the soldiers were overpowered and captured. Held for some three weeks, Sepoy Banwari Lal withstood brutal torture without yielding. His mortal remains were returned on 9 June 1999, bearing the signs of the suffering he had borne. He laid down his life at the age of twenty-one. A government school and a memorial in his village of Sigdola Chhota keep his memory alive, and he is remembered with deep reverence for his sacrifice.
