Biography

Captain Vijayant Thapar hailed from Naya Nangal in Punjab and came from a family with a strong tradition of military service. Commissioned into the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, he was a young and spirited officer who led from the front during the Kargil War of 1999. As the Indian Army fought to reclaim the heights occupied by intruders along the Line of Control, his unit was tasked with assaulting heavily defended enemy positions in the Tololing and Knoll area. Captain Thapar volunteered for the most difficult missions, displaying exceptional courage and motivating his men under intense enemy fire. During the operations to capture the strategically vital Knoll feature, he charged at the enemy bunkers, neutralising several positions despite being exposed to relentless fire. On 29 June 1999, while leading his troops with unmatched gallantry, he was struck by enemy fire and laid down his life at the age of twenty-two. For his conspicuous bravery, leadership and supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War, Captain Vijayant Thapar was awarded the Vir Chakra.
