Biography

Rifleman Om Prakash Singh Raghuvanshi hailed from Khairpur village in Siyana tehsil of Bulandshahar district, Uttar Pradesh. Born on 24 November 1967 to Shri Munshi Singh Raghuvanshi and Smt. Taripo Devi, he joined the Army on 29 May 1986 at the age of nineteen and was inducted into the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, an infantry regiment renowned for the valour of its soldiers and its many battle honours. During the Kargil War of 1999, his battalion, part of 81 Mountain Brigade, was moved into the Drass sector on 4 June 1999 as Pakistani intruders had occupied vacated heights along the Line of Control. As part of Operation Vijay, 2 Raj Rif was tasked with clearing the formidable 'Three Pimples' complex — comprising Three Pimples, Lone Hill, Knoll and Kajal — along with Point 4700 features, to dominate the National Highway and Sando valley. In a daring two-phase, multi-directional assault on the heavily defended objectives, Rifleman Om Prakash advanced with his company and laid down his life on 29 June 1999, fighting the enemy on the icy heights of Drass.
