Biography
Second Lieutenant Rama Raghoba Rane of the Corps of Engineers (Bombay Sappers) earned the Param Vir Chakra for his actions on 8 April 1948 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–48. Tasked with clearing mines and obstacles to open the Naushera–Rajouri road for advancing armour, he worked under heavy enemy shelling that killed and wounded several of his party. Disregarding his own wounds, he cleared road blocks and minefields by hand — at one point guiding a tank forward while crawling ahead of it — to secure a safe lane for the advance. His conspicuous bravery kept the offensive moving and earned him the Param Vir Chakra.
