Biography
Major Hoshiar Singh commanded a company of the 3rd Battalion, The Grenadiers during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. On 15 December 1971 he was ordered to capture the enemy stronghold of Jarpal in the Shakargarh sector. Leading the assault through heavy shelling, he took the objective in fierce hand-to-hand fighting and then held it against repeated counter-attacks. Though wounded, he moved from trench to trench rallying his men, and personally manned a medium machine gun after its crew was hit, inflicting heavy casualties and breaking the enemy attack. For his dauntless leadership and indomitable fighting spirit he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
