Biography
Naib Subedar Bana Singh of the 8th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry earned the Param Vir Chakra for his extraordinary courage on the Siachen Glacier. On 26 June 1987 he volunteered to lead a task force to recapture a Pakistani post perched at around 21,000 feet — the highest battlefield in the world. Climbing a sheer 457-metre wall of ice in temperatures near minus 50°C and near-zero visibility, his team stormed the position, clearing the enemy bunker with grenades and the bayonet. The post was retaken and later named 'Bana Top' in his honour. For his most conspicuous gallantry and leadership under the most adverse conditions he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
