Biography

Captain Roopendra Singh Garcha was born on 20 October 1974 in Jalandhar, Punjab, into a family with a proud tradition of military service. He was commissioned from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, on 5 September 1997 into the Army Air Defence and served with the 323 Air Defence Regiment. His unit was deployed for counter-insurgency duties in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir as part of Operation Rakshak. A keen and conscientious young officer, Captain Garcha led from the front and never asked of his men what he was not willing to do himself. On 30 June 2000, while leading a search operation against suspected terrorists in Lakipur village, he sensed danger and halted his team, choosing to advance alone so that his men would be spared. As he stepped forward, an improvised explosive device detonated, and he sustained fatal injuries. He was not yet twenty-six. Captain Garcha laid down his life shielding the soldiers under his command. His selflessness and courage remain an abiding inspiration.
