Biography
Sepoy Suresh Chhetri hailed from Kilaramjote village in the Naxalbari tehsil of Darjeeling district, West Bengal, and was born on 4 December 1974. Inspired by two elders who served in the 2 Naga Regiment, he aspired to join the Armed Forces from a young age. After completing his schooling, he enlisted in the Indian Army on 11 December 1993 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Naga Regiment. In July 1999, during Operation Vijay in the Kargil War, his unit was deployed in the Drass sector along the Line of Control. Following the capture of Tiger Hill on 5 July 1999, the next major objective was Point 4875, a feature dominating the national highway. As part of the two-phase assault, 2 Naga was tasked with capturing 'Twin Bumps' by first light on 7 July. Launching a fierce attack on the night of 5/6 July, Sepoy Suresh Chhetri and his comrades made steady progress against stiff opposition and secured the objective as planned. This success enabled subsequent raids on enemy mortar positions and further advances. During the intense fighting, Sepoy Suresh Chhetri was seriously wounded and later succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life at the age of 25.
