Biography
Lance Naik Ghulam Mohd Khan was born on 1 February 1973 in Nambal village of Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, the son of Shri Sher Wali Khan. A diligent and honest student, he completed his schooling up to the 9th standard in his village. Growing up in the picturesque but turbulent region of Jammu and Kashmir, he developed a deep sense of patriotism that inspired him to join the Indian Army. He was recruited into the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment on 26 December 1991 and, after rigorous training, was assigned to its 12th Battalion, earning a reputation for discipline and commitment. In 1999, during the Kargil War, his unit was redeployed from Siachen to the Batalik sector under Operation Vijay. Serving as Rocket Launcher Number One in Alpha Company, he took part in the assault on Point 5203, a heavily fortified peak at 17,000 feet. After an arduous nine-hour night climb, his team infiltrated the enemy lines with complete surprise. As roughly twenty enemy soldiers advanced, he alerted his comrades and opened fire, eliminating three. Under heavy automatic fire he continued to engage the enemy with unmatched bravery until he sustained multiple bullet wounds and succumbed to his injuries on 9 June 1999. He was awarded the Vir Chakra for his outstanding courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice.
