Biography

Lance Naik Ranjit Singh hailed from Bhalwal village in the Jammu district of Jammu & Kashmir. The son of an army veteran, he was drawn to military life from childhood and, following his dream, joined the Army after completing his schooling. He was enrolled in the 3 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, an infantry battalion known for its brave soldiers and rich history of battle honours. After training, he served in various operational areas, including a tenure at Jabalpur, before being deployed in Jammu & Kashmir. By 2017 he had risen to the rank of Lance Naik, developing into a tough and dedicated soldier. In 2017 his unit was deployed in the Keran Sector of Kupwara district in the Kashmir Valley, manning forward posts along the Line of Control in high-altitude terrain. On 12 July 2017, Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire on Indian posts, using mortars and other weapons in violation of the ceasefire. Lance Naik Ranjit Singh was manning a forward post in the Furkiya area of Chowkibal when the Indian side retaliated, triggering heavy exchanges lasting several hours. During the firing he sustained multiple splinter injuries and, despite prompt medical evacuation and treatment, later succumbed to his wounds, laying down his life in the line of duty.
