Ajit Singh

Biography

Naib Subedar Ajit Singh hailed from Dakoha village in the Jalandhar district of Punjab. The son of Sardar Harbans Singh and Yashpal Kaur, he was drawn to military service from childhood. After completing his early education, he fulfilled that ambition by joining the Army in 1976. He was inducted into the 305 Medium Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, a vital combat arm that provides firepower support during ground operations. By 1999, having served for more than two decades, he had risen to the rank of Naib Subedar. In August 1999, his unit was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Although the Kargil War had officially ended on 26 July 1999, the LoC remained tense, with unprovoked cross-border firing and active militancy demanding constant high alert. On 20 August 1999, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and opened unprovoked fire on Indian forward posts using small arms, automatic weapons and mortars. The Indian Army responded firmly, and the exchange continued for several hours. During the firing, Naib Subedar Ajit Singh was grievously wounded and rushed to a nearby army hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life in the service of the nation.
