Biography
Subedar Mohan Lal Mahla was born on 10 October 1955 in Doomra village, located in the Nawalgarh tehsil of Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan. The son of Shri Jodharm Mahla and Smt Manbhari Devi, he grew up in a humble and hardworking family amid the rural landscape of Rajasthan, imbibing the values of dedication, perseverance and patriotism from a young age. Driven by a deep sense of duty towards the nation, he fulfilled his aspiration of serving in the armed forces on 29 June 1976, when he joined the prestigious Jat Regiment of the Indian Army as a recruit. After undergoing rigorous training, he demonstrated exceptional discipline and physical endurance, earning a position as a sepoy in the 4 Jat Battalion. For Subedar Mohan Lal Mahla, soldiering was not merely a profession but a calling. His journey with the 4 Jat Battalion saw him take part in numerous operational assignments, often in challenging and hostile environments. Through sheer dedication, courage and unwavering commitment to his duties, he rose through the ranks to attain the prestigious rank of Subedar, a recognition of his leadership abilities and battlefield acumen as well as the trust and respect he had earned from comrades and superiors. In 1998, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in the Drass sector of Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir, an area of extreme cold and great strategic importance where temperatures could plunge to minus 40°C. Throughout his deployment he displayed exemplary leadership and resilience, safeguarding the morale and safety of his troops while countering threats in this volatile region. On 31 January 1999, while performing his duties in the critical area of Tapi Gully, subject to hostile activity and heavy shelling, Subedar Mohan Lal Mahla made the supreme sacrifice, reflecting the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
