Biography
Captain Devinder Singh Jass was born on September 27, 1983 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He earned his engineering degree from GLA University and an MBA from IIIT Allahabad before joining the Indian Military Academy. Commissioned in 2008 into the Corps of Signals, he volunteered for the Special Forces and was inducted into 1 Para (SF) in January 2009. Posted to Kupwara in November 2009, Captain Jass led a daring counter-insurgency operation on February 23, 2010 at Chinkipora village in Sopore district. During the operation to neutralize militants hiding in a residential building, he led the assault team from the front. In the ensuing fierce gunfight, he managed to eliminate two militants before being fatally wounded. For his exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice, Captain Devinder Singh Jass was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the nation's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
