Biography

Naib Subedar Nafe Singh was born on 16th November 1943 in Jhajjar district, Haryana. He joined the Indian Army on 16th November 1962 at the age of 19 and was recruited into 11 Jat of the Jat Regiment. Over his 23 years of distinguished service, he earned numerous medals including the Raksha Medal, Sainya Seva Medal, Sangram Medal, Paschim Star, 25th Independence Anniversary Medal, and 20 Years Long Service Medal. On 13th March 1986, during Operation Meghdoot at the Siachen Glacier, Nb Sub Nafe Singh led a patrol along the treacherous Saltoro Ridge when a devastating avalanche, triggered by enemy shelling, buried his team under thick snow. Despite a massive rescue operation, the courageous soldier could not be saved. For his exceptional leadership and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.
