Biography

Binod Kumar Shukla was born in Itwarpura village, Vaishali district, Bihar. Displaying early patriotism, he enlisted in the Indian Army and served with the 17th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment. During counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, Havildar Shukla demonstrated exceptional courage. In March 1997, during a cordon and search operation at Ahan village in Ganderbal, he engaged militants in close combat. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he maneuvered himself close to the target house under heavy fire and engaged the militants, sustaining a fatal gunshot wound in the process. For his conspicuous gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
