Biography

Naik Ganesh Prasad Yadav was born on 19 February 1971 in the Patna district of Bihar. He joined the Indian Army on 28 December 1987 and was posted to the 1st Battalion of The Bihar Regiment, serving with the unit for over a decade. During the 1999 Kargil conflict, Naik Ganesh Prasad Yadav was part of the Charlie Company of 1 Bihar that assaulted the fortified enemy position at Point 4268 on the Jubar Ridge in the Batalik sub-sector. On 29 May 1999, advancing under intense enemy artillery and small-arms fire, he charged the enemy position and killed two intruders at close quarters. Though shot in the hip, he continued to engage the enemy with determination until he succumbed to his wounds. For his conspicuous gallantry and supreme sacrifice, Naik Ganesh Prasad Yadav was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
