Biography

Devendra Singh hailed from Tinsoli village, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. He joined the Indian Army after completing his school education and served with distinction in the elite 4 Para (Special Forces) battalion, participating in numerous counter-insurgency operations. During Operation Rangdori Baihk (April 1-5, 2020), Havildar Devendra Singh was airdropped with para commandos into the Zurhama forest area of Kupwara district to intercept terrorists infiltrating near the Line of Control. When his comrades came under heavy fire in the snow-covered terrain, he moved forward to evacuate an injured soldier. While providing cover and attempting the rescue, he sustained gunshot wounds and was martyred at the battle site on 5 April 2020 alongside Subedar Sanjiv Kumar and three other brave soldiers. For his exceptional courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, Havildar Devendra Singh was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal on 26 January 2021.
