Biography

Amit Kumar hailed from Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand. He was initially recruited into 16 Garhwal Rifles before volunteering for the elite 4 Para (Special Forces) in 2012. Known for his cheerful disposition, he excelled in counter-insurgency operations and physical endurance. During Operation Rangdori Baihk (April 1-5, 2020), an anti-infiltration mission in the Keran sector of Kupwara district, his squad was airdropped into snow-covered terrain along the Line of Control. When terrorists opened fire, Amit Kumar provided covering fire with his PIKA gun to rescue his injured comrades. Despite being seriously wounded, he continued firing to protect his team until he succumbed to his grievous injuries on 5 April 2020. For his exceptional bravery and supreme sacrifice, Paratrooper Amit Kumar was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal on 26 January 2021.
