Biography

Sepoy Pabu Ram Thori hailed from Salwa Kalan village in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, where he was born on 7 June 1990 into a farming family. He enlisted in the Indian Army at the age of twenty on 25 June 2010 and was commissioned into the 17th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment. He was later deployed with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley. On 11 August 2015, during an operation in the Shopian district of Jammu & Kashmir, his party came under indiscriminate automatic-weapons fire from terrorists hiding in safe locations. Fighting back with great valour, Sepoy Thori sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including three to the chest and two to the neck. Despite the gravest of injuries, he battled for his life for a week before succumbing on 18 August 2015, making the supreme sacrifice for the nation at the age of twenty-five. He is remembered with deep respect for his courage and unflinching devotion to duty.
