During June–July 1999, his unit was deployed in the Batalik sector of Ladakh as part of Operation Vijay, operating under the 70 Infantry Brigade. The enemy's principal intrusions and defences lay along the formidable Khalubar–Padma Go Ridgeline, and 22 Grenadiers was tasked with capturing the Khalubar and Point 5287 complex. Led by Major Ajit Singh Shekhawat, Grenadier Zubair Ahmad and his comrades reached their objective but were met by a fierce enemy counter-attack. Heavily outnumbered, the Grenadiers fought continuously for three nights, inching forward amid heavily fortified bunkers and relentless artillery fire at high altitude.
