Karan Singh

Biography

Sepoy Karan Singh was born in the village of Raipur, in Ranoth Post, Tehsil Mundawar, in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. Raised in a humble household, he imbibed the values of hard work, resilience and patriotism from an early age. Disciplined and determined by nature, he was inspired by the martial traditions of his homeland and chose the path of a soldier. He joined the Indian Army and was inducted into the 17 Jat Regiment, a battalion renowned for its bravery and battle honours. During the Kargil War in 1999, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in the Mushkoh Valley under 79 Mountain Brigade. As part of the operation to capture the strategically vital Point 4875, which dominated the Mugalpur–Drass stretch of the National Highway, 17 Jat was tasked with securing the Pimple Complex. On the night of 6 July 1999, the Charlie Company assaulted Pimple II, locating and clearing four enemy bunkers manned with automatic machine guns. While storming these positions, Sepoy Karan Singh was hit by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries. For his commendable courage, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Mention-in-Despatches.
