Biography

Sepoy Shish Ram Nimad was born on 10 December 1976 in Naurangpura village of Rajgarh tehsil, Churu district, Rajasthan. Raised in a rural setting, he grew up with values of discipline, resilience and patriotism, which drew him towards a career in the armed forces. He was recruited into the Jat Regiment on 28 December 1995, quickly adapting to the rigours of military life during his training. In 1999, his 17 Jat Battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and inducted into the Mushkoh Valley as part of Operation Vijay during the Kargil War. The battalion was tasked with capturing the strategically vital Point 4875, which dominated the Mugalpur–Drass stretch of the National Highway. On the night of 6 July 1999, the Charlie Company launched an assault on Pimple II. The Pakistani intruders held several fortified bunkers armed with automatic machine guns. Fighting with great courage, the troops cleared all four enemy bunkers, but during the action Sepoy Shish Ram was hit by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life before turning 23. He was awarded the Mention in Despatches for his courage, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice.
