Biography

Naib Subedar Subhash Chandra was born on 1 December 1965 in Bhairupura village of Sikar district, Rajasthan. He completed his schooling at Shri Raghunath Vidyalaya in Lakshmangarh and joined the Army in 1986 at the age of 21, being assigned to the 10 Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), an elite infantry unit renowned for its daring operations. Over the course of his service he took part in numerous operations, serving in Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan and in the Kargil War as part of Operation Vijay. By 2007 he had been promoted to Naib Subedar, having completed more than twenty years of service and matured into a tough, professionally capable junior commissioned officer. In 2007 his unit was deployed for counter-terrorist operations in Jammu & Kashmir. On 3 October 2007, acting on intelligence about the presence of hardcore Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, including a district commander, in Bandipora district, a search-and-destroy operation was launched. Naib Subedar Subhash Chandra was part of the assault team. As the troops made contact, a fierce firefight broke out. Leading from the front, he engaged the militants with exceptional valour, and the troops eliminated two terrorists, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba district commander. In the heavy exchange of fire he was hit by several bullets and laid down his life. For his conspicuous courage, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
