Biography
Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh hailed from Suligam village of Ramban district in Jammu & Kashmir. He was recruited into the 8th battalion of the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, a regiment widely respected for its intrepid soldiers and numerous battle exploits. Over the course of his service he earned a reputation as a dedicated and courageous soldier. During 2018, his unit of the J&K Light Infantry was deployed in the Sunderbani sector of Jammu & Kashmir along the Line of Control. The LoC in this region is highly active and volatile, where ceasefire violations occur frequently and without warning, and where infiltration is often attempted under the cover of artillery fire or with the assistance of a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) comprising special forces soldiers of the Pakistan Army. On 21 October 2018, a Border Action Team, along with some militants, launched an unprovoked attack on an Area Domination Patrol of 8 JAK LI. Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh was part of that patrol. The Indian Army retaliated and a fierce gun-battle ensued. Two of the intruders were eliminated during the operation and warlike stores were recovered. However, during the exchange of fire, Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh, along with Havildar Kaushal Kumar and Rifleman Rajat Kumar, was seriously injured and rushed to hospital, where all three brave-hearts later succumbed to their wounds. A valiant and devoted soldier, Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh laid down his life in the service of the nation and was cremated with full military honours in his hometown on 22 October 2018.
