Biography
Lance Naik Ghulam Mohiuddin Rather hailed from Panjpora village in Bijbehara, South Kashmir. He joined the Indian Army in 2012 and was recruited into 4 JAK LI of the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment. After serving with his parent unit, he was deputed to serve with 44 Rashtriya Rifles battalion deployed in J&K for counter-insurgency operations. On the night of 22/23 February 2017, security forces received information about the presence of hardcore militants in Kungoo village in Shopian district. A joint operation was launched with elements of 44 RR and J&K Police SOG. Lance Naik Rather was part of the assault team. When the team reached Mulu Chitragam along the way back, militants belonging to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen attacked the convoy by firing indiscriminately, leaving seven soldiers injured including two officers. Lance Naik Ghulam Mohiuddin Rather along with Sapper Sreejith M J and Sepoy Vikas Singh Gurjar succumbed to their injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
