Biography

Havildar Mahavir Singh was born in the village of Gharai in the Hisar district of Haryana. Raised in a family that valued hard work, integrity and service, he grew up with a strong sense of patriotism that guided him toward a career in the Indian Army. He joined the 17 Jat Regiment, a unit celebrated for its history of bravery, and through rigorous training developed into a highly skilled soldier known for his courage, loyalty and discipline. During 1999, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir when Pakistani forces infiltrated the Kargil region. Under 79 Mountain Brigade, the 17 Jat was tasked with capturing the strategically vital Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley, a feature dominating the National Highway. The assault was launched on the night of 4 July 1999 after artillery softening. By the early hours of 5 July, A and D Companies captured Whale Back and Pimple I despite fierce enemy resistance. During this fierce action, Havildar Mahavir Singh was hit by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries. For his remarkable courage and unwavering commitment to duty, he was awarded the Sena Medal.
