Krishan Lal Kundu

Biography

Naik Krishan Lal Kundu was born in the village of Titoli in the Rohtak district of Haryana. Known for his steadfast dedication, loyalty and patriotism, he lived by the values of honour, integrity and commitment. His hard work and exceptional service earned him a well-deserved promotion to the rank of Naik. He served with pride in the 17 Jat Regiment, a distinguished unit celebrated for its valour and discipline, where he quickly earned the admiration and respect of his comrades for his sense of duty and selflessness. During the 1999 Kargil War, his battalion was inducted into the Mushkoh Valley as part of the operation to evict Pakistani infiltrators. The 79 Mountain Brigade planned the capture of the vital Point 4875 feature, which dominated the Drass–Mugalpur stretch of the National Highway. On the night of 4 July, 17 Jat launched its assault, and by early 5 July the battalion had captured Whale Back and Pimple I despite stiff enemy resistance. When his comrade Naik Balwan Singh fell to enemy fire, Krishan Lal, driven by an unyielding sense of duty and camaraderie, moved forward under heavy fire to retrieve his fallen comrade's body. During this heroic act he was struck by enemy gunfire and, despite his valiant efforts, succumbed to his injuries, making the ultimate sacrifice for the nation on 6 July 1999.
