Dharamvir Singh

Biography

Sepoy Dharamvir Singh hailed from Dhakla village in the Jhajjar district of Haryana. Drawn to military service from his school days, he joined the Army after completing his early education and was recruited into the 17 Jat Battalion of the Jat Regiment, an infantry unit renowned for its valiant soldiers and storied battles. By 1999 he had matured into a highly skilled and committed soldier. During the Kargil War, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and was inducted into the Mushkoh Valley on 22 May 1999 under 79 Mountain Brigade. A bold plan was drawn up to capture Point 4875, a dominating feature overlooking the Drass–Mugalpur stretch of the national highway. As part of this operation, 17 Jat was tasked with seizing the Pimple Complex. In fierce fighting against well-entrenched Pakistani infiltrators holding fortified bunkers, Sepoy Dharamvir Singh and his comrades captured their objective on 7 July 1999. During the subsequent mop-up operation he was hit by enemy fire and, despite the efforts to save him, succumbed to his injuries on 8 July 1999, laying down his life in the line of duty.
