Biography

Havildar Hari Om Singh Dhariwal was born on 7 July 1959 in Khungai village of Jhajjar district, Haryana. After completing his education, he joined the Indian Army and became part of the renowned Jat Regiment. On completing his training he was posted to the 17 Jat Battalion as a Sepoy, and his commitment and exceptional performance earned him steady promotion, so that by 1999 he had risen to the rank of Havildar. In 1999, during the Kargil War, his battalion was deployed in the Mushkoh Valley under Operation Vijay. Following the recapture of key positions, the next critical objective was Point 4875, a feature dominating the strategic National Highway between Mugalpur and Drass. As part of a phased assault beginning on 4 July 1999, 17 Jat captured Pimple I and Whale Back. On the night of 6 July, Charlie Company launched an assault on Pimple II, facing enemy positions fortified with bunkers and automatic weapons. Fighting with great courage during this intense combat, Havildar Hari Om sustained fatal injuries and laid down his life at the age of 30. He was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for his valour and devotion to duty.
