Biography

Lance Naik Vijay Singh Kundu was born in the village of Sundarpura in the Rohtak district of Haryana. After completing his education, he resolved to join the Indian Army, driven by a long-held dream of wearing the military uniform and serving his nation. He enlisted in the Jat Regiment, an outfit renowned for its bravery, discipline and rich legacy of service, and after rigorous training earned his place in the 17 Jat Battalion. During 1999, the 17 Jat Battalion was deployed in Jammu & Kashmir along the Line of Control and was inducted into the Mushkoh Valley as part of operations to evict Pakistani intruders during the Kargil conflict. The battalion was tasked with capturing the strategically vital Point 4875. In the assault launched on the night of 04 July 1999, A and D Companies captured Whale Back and Pimple I despite stiff enemy resistance. During the fighting, two of Vijay Singh's comrades were fatally wounded. Driven by an unshakable sense of duty and camaraderie, he braved relentless enemy fire to retrieve the bodies of his fallen comrades. While undertaking this heroic act he was struck by enemy gunfire and sustained critical injuries, succumbing to them on 06 July 1999. He was awarded the Mention in Despatches for his courage, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice.
