Kanchi Singh

Biography

Sepoy Kanchi Singh was born in the village of Kisuagarhi, in the Khurja tehsil of Bulandshahar district, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a humble family, he grew up with the virtues of resilience, discipline and humility, and joined the Indian Army out of a deep sense of patriotism and duty. He was enrolled into the 17 Jat Battalion of the Jat Regiment, one of the Army's most decorated infantry regiments. In 1999, during the Kargil War, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and inducted into the Mushkoh Valley as part of 79 Mountain Brigade. The battalion was tasked with the capture of the strategically vital Point 4875, which dominated a long stretch of the national highway between Mugalpur and Drass. During Phase II of the assault, the Charlie Company launched an attack on Pimple II. As the troops fought with admirable courage to clear four enemy bunkers armed with automatic machine guns, Sepoy Kanchi Singh was struck by enemy fire. He soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. The securing of the Pimple Complex paved the way for the recapture of Tiger Hill. Sepoy Kanchi Singh was a gallant and determined soldier who laid down his life in the line of duty.
